PVC edge banding

PVC edge banding is the strip glued to the exposed edge of a cut board part; moducut writes which edges of each part get banding, and the band thickness, into the cut list. The banding allowance is deducted from the cutting size, so the part comes to its finished size once banded.

Short answer

Open the module in design mode and choose the General mode on the Options › PVC tab; to change a part group separately, set that group’s mode to Custom and mark the edges. A single part’s banding is changed on the PVC banding row in Part Properties.

Banding modes

The General row on the PVC tab sets the banding mode for all parts of the module:

  • Automatic and Visible. Exposed edges are banded.
  • None. No edges are banded.
  • All. All edges of the part are banded.
  • Custom. Edges are banded as you mark them.

On a new module the mode is Visible: on the side panels, the front, top and bottom edges; on panels and shelves, the front edge; on doors, all four edges are banded, and the back panel is not. By default the plinth is banded on its bottom edge only.

Part groups

Below the General row, part groups are listed separately: Sides, Bottom / Top, Shelves, Horizontal Dividers, Uprights, Doors and Drawers. If you change a group’s Mode row, that group leaves the General setting.

  1. Open the Options › PVC tab.
  2. On the Mode row of the group you want to change, choose Custom. The edge boxes start with the current visible selection.
  3. Mark which edges get banding with the boxes on the Edges row.
  4. On the Plinth row, choose None, Bottom edge or Four edges.

Parts without a group, such as the crown, rails and back panel, follow the General mode.

Banding a single part

Click the part in design mode and turn edges on and off on the PVC banding row in Part Properties. In Single Part Processing, the new part’s PVC banding step does the same; in the Settings menu on the Single Part ribbon, the PVC thickness is chosen as 0.4, 0.8, 1 or 2 mm. In the Sizing window, edge banding is also marked inside the table with the L1, L2, W1 and W2 boxes.

Cutting size and banding allowance

Length and Width in the cut list are the cutting size: with the band thickness deducted. On the Sheet tab, banded rows also show the finished size and a banding summary, so you see which size should come out at assembly. The Edge Banding Allowance field in Nesting Settings sets the allowance reserved for banded edges during nesting; with the PVC 1–4 boxes in the Part List, you can change a group’s banded edges for nesting.

Banding meters and cost

In the Hardware List, the total meters of PVC banding for each pattern are shown in the Edge Band category. In the quote, banding meters are multiplied by the unit price for each thickness and pattern; in the Consumption and Cost panel of Nesting Results, Edge Banding (PVC) is also a separate group and banding labor is counted in the Cutting and Banding group.

Tip: When ordering banding you need both the thickness and the pattern; that is why the hardware list gives different patterns of the same thickness on separate rows.

Frequently asked questions

In the default Visible mode the back panel is not banded. The back panel has no group row of its own and follows the General mode.

It is written edge by edge in the PVC column on the List tab and in the Band summary on the Sheet tab; for example "Front 2 · Back 0.4".

Right-click the drawer and choose Change Drawer Box Properties; you choose the mode on the PVC row of the Drawer Customization window.
