Plinth, rails and back panel
Last updated: · By: the moducut team
The plinth, rails and back panel are the components that form a cabinet carcass’s base structure, its top and bottom connecting parts and its back closure. In moducut, all three are set from the bottom of the left rail in module design mode.
Short answer
Plinth and legs
In the Base Structure (Plinth/Legs) section of the Plinth / Legs panel, choose None, Plinth, Legs (Chrome) or Plinth Feet (Plastic) on the Type row.
- Plinth. Number of Supports adds intermediate supports between the front and back plinth; Plinth Setback moves the plinth in from the front. On the Plinth sides row, you turn the left, right and back plinth on separately.
- Legs. The Leg Type is chosen from the list; leg counts go into the hardware list.
When you click the plinth part in design mode, Part Properties shows the height and inset-from-front values, and for the back plinth the inset-from-back value. The plinth’s edge banding is chosen on the Plinth row of the PVC tab.
Rails
The Rail panel sets the carcass’s top and bottom connection. In the Top Rail Settings and Bottom Rail Settings sections, choose Full panel or Rail for the Top panel or Bottom panel. With Rail, the connection is Single or Double; you enter the width and direction (Horizontal or Vertical) of the front and back rails. A railed carcass lets you use two strips instead of a full panel, especially on base cabinets topped by a worktop.
Back panel
In the Back Panel panel you choose how the back panel sits on the carcass:
- Groove. Goes into a groove cut into the sides.
- Rebate. Sits in the rebate on the back edge of the sides.
- Overlay. Nailed flat onto the back of the carcass.
- Connector. Attached with a back closure connector.
- None. The back of the carcass is left open.
The back panel board’s material and color are chosen in the same panel. In the Back Panel Position (Groove) section, turning on Dado joint lets you enter the Distance from back and Groove Depth. The Extend from top and Extend from bottom switches in the Back panel extension section set the back panel’s top and bottom edges. Reset Back Panel returns the settings to default.
Splitting the back panel
To split the back panel behind uprights and horizontal dividers, use the Split back panel switch in the tool panel; to split the back panel into sections, use the Section Back Panel tool. With column notching, the back panel is split to follow the notch on its own. When you click a piece of a split back panel, you can change that piece’s fitting and groove setting separately.
Defaults
The Plinth page in Settings › General Settings sets a new plinth’s height, inset from the front, number of supports, edge banding and connection. The Back Panel page has the size and groove width tolerances for back panel types, the back panel’s distance from the back and the back panel splitting rule. The Rail page sets single or double connection for rails.
Frequently asked questions
On the Back panel row of the Options › Material tab in design mode. To change it on all modules in the project, use the Back Panel tab of Bulk Edit.
Yes. Plinth parts appear in the cut list and in nesting under the Plinth Parts category. If you chose legs, the legs go into the hardware list.
It means the back panel sits in a groove in the sides, a set distance in from the carcass’s back edge. With Dado joint on, you enter the distance from the back and the groove depth.
