Material, pattern and thickness
Last updated: · By: the moducut team
In moducut, the material is the type, thickness and surface pattern of the board a part is cut from; it is chosen separately for the carcass, doors and back panel. The material you choose feeds directly into the cut list, nesting and cost.
Short answer
Board materials
In moducut, boards are defined by material and thickness: Melamine chipboard, MDF, Melamine MDF, Lacquered MDF, Plywood and Solid wood. The common thicknesses of each material come ready in the list. Surface patterns are split into the Basic colors, Melamine, Gloss, Matte and Acrylic families; the stone patterns in the Worktop family are used for worktops only.
In the cut list and in nesting, parts with the same material, thickness and pattern are grouped together. That is why doors with a different pattern are laid out on separate sheets.
Choosing the module’s material
- Open the module in design mode and press Options.
- Go to the Material tab.
- On the Carcass row, choose the carcass material and carcass thickness.
- On the Door row, choose the door material and door thickness.
- On the Back panel row, choose the back panel material and back panel thickness.
The choice is applied to the carcass right away; parts appear with the new material in the cut list. You can also change the back panel material from the Back Panel panel in design mode.
Grain direction
For grained patterns, you choose which way the pattern runs on the part from the pattern rows on the Material tab. On the carcass, you choose Up-down or Front to back for the sides, and Left to right or Front to back for the horizontal parts; doors have their own Grain direction row.
In nesting, parts whose grain direction must be kept are locked with the GRAIN column in Nesting Settings, so the part is not rotated when it is placed on the sheet.
The material of a single part
When you click a part in design mode, its board appears in Part Properties. To change the material of the same part group across many modules in the project, use the By part group section on the Material tab of Bulk Edit; groups such as doors, carcass, plinth, crown and side fillers are listed separately.
Changing materials across the project
- Press Room Design › Bulk (Alt + B) and choose the scope: Whole project, Base cabinets or Wall cabinets.
- Open the Material tab.
- In Replace mode, the patterns used in the project are listed for the carcass, doors and back panel, with how many modules use them; choose a new one in place of the pattern you want to change. In Assign mode, you assign a material directly to the carcass, doors and back panel.
- If the pattern you want is not in the list, open the full pattern catalog with Choose another….
- Press Apply.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The carcass, door and back panel are separate rows on the Material tab. Nesting lays each material out on its own sheets; if you like, you can also have doors and back panels put on separate sheets in Nesting Settings.
The Material column on the List tab shows the board’s material and pattern; the thickness is in the Thk. column. You change the format of the material name on part labels with the General Settings › Label › Material Name template.
Yes. Parts with a locked grain direction are placed on the sheet without being rotated; this can make the layout a little less efficient, but keeps the pattern running the same way across parts.
