Drawing your first project
Last updated: · By: the moducut team
Your first project is where you enter a room’s dimensions in moducut, place modules in it and take it all the way to the cut list. This page walks through the path from the start screen to your first cut list, in order.
Short answer
Opening a new project
- On the start screen, press the New Project button or the Create new project card.
- Type the project name in the box that opens; if you like, fill in the customer, phone, address and note fields too.
- In the Room dimensions (mm) section, enter W (width), D (depth) and H (height).
- Press CREATE ROOM. The room is built with these dimensions and the editor opens.
If you have a previously saved project, you can drag and drop the .mbz file onto the Upload file area of the same box, or choose it with Browse your files. In the editor, the + button on the top bar also opens a new project; the previous project stays open in its own tab.
Placing modules
- Press Library in the Modules group of the ribbon (Ctrl + L). The Module Library panel opens on the left.
- Open a category such as Base Cabinets, Wall Cabinets or Tall Cabinets and click a module. The module is placed in the room.
- Drag the module along the wall. With Magnet in the View group on, the module snaps to the wall and the neighboring module.
- To change its size, right-click the module, choose Cabinet Properties and type the width, height and depth in the panel that opens on the right.
For a corner, use the L Corner or 45° Corner buttons on the ribbon; a corner cabinet is added and opens in design mode. To change a cabinet’s shelves, drawers and doors, double-click the module.
Saving
File › Save on the ribbon (Ctrl + S) saves the project as an .mbz file. moducut also saves open projects to its own project store shortly after each change; when the program is closed and reopened, your projects come back where you left them. Still, to move a project to another computer or back it up, save an .mbz file with Save.
Viewing the cut list
The cut list is created the moment you add a module to the room. Open it with Production › Cut (Alt + F) on the ribbon: cabinet name, part name, material, length, width, thickness, quantity and PVC come from the drawing. The door and hardware lists are in the same group, under the Door and Hardware buttons.
Next steps
- Detail the room. Enter doors, windows and the floor shape as on the Setting up the room page.
- Add obstacles. Add columns and beams and notch the modules as on the Columns, beams and notching page.
- Build the module from the inside. Arrange shelves, drawers and doors with Module design mode.
- Move to production. Lay the parts out on sheets with Nesting and get the G-code.
