Sizing and inner cuts
Last updated: · By: the moducut team
Sizing is cutting the part’s outer edge out of the sheet; an inner cut is a through cut inside the part, such as a glass cut-out or a through drawing. moducut lets you set the pass for each of them separately.
Short answer
Where the setting is
The same machine setting appears in three places; changing it in one changes the others:
- Settings › CNC Settings › Cutting Settings › Cutting.
- The Cutting section in Production › Nesting › Nesting Settings.
- The Cutting panel in the Cutting simulation; when you change it, the program and simulation are regenerated.
Sizing
- Pass. With contour (two passes) or Without contour (single pass). With contour, the last pass leaves a thin skin that holds the part on the sheet.
- First pass (18 mm) and Last pass. With contour, the thickness of the first and last pass for an 18 mm board; when one is typed, the other takes the rest. The last pass starts at 1 mm.
- Lead-in. Straight plunge or Ramp; for a ramp, the Ramp length.
- Cut direction. Whether contours are cut clockwise or counterclockwise.
Inner cut
The INNER CUT section is independent of sizing:
- Pass. With contour (two passes) or Without contour (single pass). The initial value is With contour.
- First pass (18 mm) and Last pass. With contour, the thickness of the two passes; if the inner cut has no value of its own, the sizing value is used.
With a contoured inner cut, the middle piece stays attached to the sheet until the last pass. The last pass runs at the end of the program, after the part is cut to size. Through drawing profiles are machined with contour even if sizing is without contour.
In the CNC Production File
In the Create CNC Production File window, Inner Cut is a separate row. Choose With contour or Without contour on the Pass row; with contour, type mm values into the Before and After boxes. These values are written to the same machine setting too.
Frequently asked questions
The glass rebate is machined as a ring pocket in the fewest passes; the step between passes is the cutter diameter, evenly spaced.
No. The setting is written to the selected machine profile; when you switch to another machine, that machine’s values come up.
In some post layouts the inner cut is not shown as a separate setting; on those profiles the inner cut is done in the machine’s own layout.
