Where do I set the kerf and trim margin?

Cutting list and plan · Last updated:

Short answer

In the General Settings section of Nesting Settings, opened with Production › “Nesting”. “Tool Allowance (KERF)” sets the gap left between two parts, and “Edge Margin” sets the trim margin left from the raw edge of the sheet, both in mm.

Step by step

  1. Press Production › “Nesting” on the ribbon (Alt + W); Nesting Settings opens.
  2. In the “Tool Allowance (KERF)” box under General Settings, type the width your CNC cutter (router bit) removes, in mm.
  3. In the “Edge Margin” box, type the trim margin to be cut from the raw edge of the sheet.
  4. If you want an extra allowance on banded edges, set the “Edge Banding Allowance”.
  5. Press “Run Nesting”; the parts are laid out on the sheet with the new margins.
If the kerf is entered smaller than the cutter diameter, the program uses the cutter diameter so parts do not overlap. The margins you enter apply to every sheet in the project; the “Saw Blade” and “Edge Trim” settings in the Sizing window change the same margins.
