This is an approximate estimate based on a simple shelf layout. The real cutting plan comes from moducut nesting, based on part sizes, grain direction and cutting settings.

How do you calculate MDF and panel cutting?

  • A 10 mm edge trim is deducted from every side of the sheet; what remains is the usable area.
  • Parts are sorted from largest to smallest and laid out on the sheet in shelves, with a kerf left between them; both shelf directions are tried and the one that needs fewer sheets wins.
  • Waste is the share left over when the net area of the parts is subtracted from the total area of the sheets used.

It places parts with a simple shelf method, so it is an approximate estimate. For the exact number of sheets you need a cutting plan in which every part is placed individually.

A cut list optimizer is a tool that places a list of parts on sheets with as little waste as possible. This calculator lays the parts out with a simple shelf method to estimate the number of sheets; for a part-by-part cutting plan, moducut’s nesting feature is used.

Common MDF and particleboard sheet sizes are 2100 × 2800 mm and 1830 × 3660 mm; furniture carcasses are mostly 18 mm thick. Confirm the exact size with your supplier.

Place parts together, allow parts to rotate on sheets without a grain pattern, and use offcuts in later jobs. moducut nesting places all the parts of a project on the sheets together and fills offcut panels first.
