# Setting up the room

Last updated: October 25, 2026

In moducut, the room is the workspace that defines the walls, floor and openings where modules are placed; its dimensions are entered when you open a new project, and details are changed in the Room Editing window. This page explains setting the room’s size, floor, doors and windows.

> **Short answer** Open the Room Editing window with **Room Design › Room** on the ribbon. Enter the dimensions and floor shape on the Room tab, add openings on the Door / Window tab and press **Save**.

## The Room Editing window

The window has three tabs at the top: Room, Door / Window and Column / Beam. Changes are applied to the room as you type and can be undone; **Save** closes the window. If a column or door is selected in the room when you open the window, its tab opens directly. Column and beam settings are explained on the [Columns, beams and notching](/en/docs/columns-beams-and-notching/notching-for-columns-and-beams/) page.

## Dimensions and floor shape

1. Press **Room Design › Room** and open the Room tab.
2. Type the dimensions in mm into the Width, Depth and Height fields.
3. On the Floor row, choose Rectangle, L-shaped or Free polygon.
4. For a free polygon, enter the corner positions one by one; you can add a new corner between two corners or delete a corner.
5. On the Walls row, turn off the walls that are not in the room; for example, for an open kitchen you can leave only the back wall.

The W, D and H dimensions you entered when opening the new project are written into these fields; you change the size here later.

## Color and floor pattern

On the Room tab you choose the Wall color and Floor color. The floor pattern can be Plain, Tile or Parquet. For tiles, you choose the tile size, the tile look and the grout color; for parquet, the plank width and laying pattern (Straight or Herringbone). These settings are for display only and do not go into the cut list; they make the room look close to real when presenting to the customer.

## Adding doors and windows

1. In the Room Editing window, go to the Door / Window tab.
2. Press **+ Door** or **+ Window**. The new opening is placed in the middle of the first wall.
3. On the Wall row, choose which wall the opening is on.
4. In the Size and Position fields, type the width, height and its place on the wall.
5. Choose the kind of opening on the Type row and its look on the Surface row; for a window, set the Sill.
6. Press **Save**.

If there are several doors or windows, each is listed in its own section with a name such as "Door 1" or "Window 2".

> **Tip:** If you will put a backsplash under the window, enter the window’s height from the floor correctly from the start; the backsplash under the window runs up to the sill.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I hide the room and work with modules only?

Yes. View › Infinite page on the ribbon hides the room and opens an infinite gridded floor; press the button again to bring the room back.

### How do I draw an L-shaped kitchen?

Choose L-shaped on the Floor row, or enter the corners one by one with Free polygon. Place the modules along the two walls; use the L Corner module in the corner.

### Does the wall color affect the cut list?

No. Wall, floor and opening settings are for the scene’s look only; the cut list is made up only of the modules’ parts.
